Around 60 apprentices and their instructors from Germany welcomed the more than 50 guests and participants who came to Martinsdorf (Metiș) for the opening of the first brunch event of the season.

As in previous years, this event concept is distinguished by the fact that local hosts prepare culinary specialties around a fortified church, following the motto: “A good atmosphere begins with good food.” The program also includes guided tours of the church and the fortified church complex, accompanied by short excursions into the history of the region. The overall aim is to raise awareness among local people and visitors alike about this valuable historical heritage and to encourage them to help preserve it.

What made this edition especially unique was the presence of apprentices from the vocational school for construction trades in Munich, who have been working on the grounds of the Martinsdorf fortified church since 2011. There, they discover an additional and fascinating aspect of their profession: the restoration of historic buildings. Over the years, this remarkable initiative has grown to include nine vocational schools from across Germany — from Hamburg to Passau — as well as one from Switzerland. The participating students represent a variety of trades, including roofers, carpenters, joiners, and church painters. For two weeks at a time, the young participants work on restoration projects involving historic churches in Martinsdorf.

For the first time — much to the delight of the German guests, who saw it as a meaningful gesture of appreciation for their work — the Romanian mayor of the village and his deputy attended the event together with their families. They also brought trays of local specialties, while their young daughters contributed to the festive atmosphere of the day. Dressed in traditional Romanian folk costumes, the girls confidently performed songs in front of the audience.

And that was not all: everyone present was invited to learn a few basic steps of Romanian folk dancing, and many participants — including the instructors — enthusiastically joined in.

The day concluded with a walk along the village street together with the young historianTudor Coman, who used several examples of traditional houses to passionately explain why it is worth fighting for the restoration and preservation of these historic buildings and Saxon homes.

This year’s first Transylvanian Brunch organized by the Fortified Churches Foundation of the Evangelical Church A.C. in Romania began with an unusual initiative.
