The third workshop Schulwerkstatt series featured the 4th-grade students from Cristian, Sibiu County, as its main protagonists. Once again, we were pleasantly surprised to find that these pupils – like many others from their community – had previously visited and participated in activities at the fortified church, both during school and in their free time.
Together, we revisited the interactive quiz, which sparked enthusiastic and active involvement from the children. In the classroom, the same key question was posed by the three participating architects:
“What would you like to experience or create in the courtyard and towers of the fortified church – something that you would truly enjoy?”
With their imaginations running free and their curiosity wide open, the children came up with bold and creative ideas. They watched inspirational examples of how historic buildings are being reused in Romania and abroad, and then quickly got to work. They transformed their visions into a shared model, co-creating a space that reflected their wishes.
This time, the towers were also included in the students’ plans – one of them becoming a space for history-themed workshops and film screenings. The courtyard was reimagined with areas for sports, relaxation, cultural activities, and even special spaces for pets.
Once again, the children brought new color and life to the fortified church of Cristian, leaving their creative mark during the third educational workshop in the Schulwerkstatt series.
