Atelier I Cisnădie – Pilot Edition

With the first edition of the Cisnădie Atelier, we tested a new format of mini-workshops through which we aim to create connections between traditional local crafts, their contemporary reinterpretation, and the cultural heritage represented by the Fortified Church of Cisnădie. It offers another way of discovering the story of the place, its history, its community, and the traditions that have shaped it over time.

The programme began with a visit to the creative studio of Iulia Lavu, a designer specialising in decorative knotting techniques and objects made from natural fibres. Participants were invited to step into her creative universe and learn about her professional journey, as well as the stages through which a simple strand of natural fibre is transformed, through patience, care and creativity, into a unique object created especially for each client.

The visit also included a presentation of the workspace and the process of preparing the materials, offering participants the opportunity to better understand the work and craftsmanship behind each creation.

The practical part of the workshop followed next. Using only their hands and no additional tools, each participant created their own object – whether a bag, a basket or a lampshade. Creativity was encouraged at every step, and the result was a collection of objects made from natural fibres that can be untied and transformed into new forms at any time, thanks to the versatility of the technique used.

The entire workshop took place in the spacious, green and shady courtyard of the parish house in Cisnădie, a setting that greatly contributed to the relaxed and creative atmosphere of the day.

The programme concluded with a guided tour of the Fortified Church of Cisnădie, led by Reverend Zoran Kezdi, who spoke to participants about the history of the ensemble and the valuable frescoes that were brought back to light during the most recent restoration works.

Through this pilot format, we aim to explore new ways in which built heritage, traditional crafts and contemporary creativity can enter into dialogue, offering participants authentic experiences and new perspectives on local heritage.
